+Spanish archaeologists exploring the bay that curves between the southern port of Algeciras and the Rock of Gibraltar have documented the wrecks of more than 30 ships that came to grief near the Pillars of Hercules between the fifth century BC and the second world war.
+Over the millennia, the bay, which sits at the north end of the strait of Gibraltar that separates Europe from Africa, has swallowed everything from Phoenician and Roman vessels to British, Spanish, Venetian and Dutch ships – as well as the odd aeroplane.
+A three-year project led by the University of Cádiz has now identified 151 archaeological sites in the bay, among them 134 shipwrecks. To date, the researchers and their colleagues from the University of Granada have worked to document 34 of those wrecks.

+In 1900, the British Royal Navy purchased the HMS Tiger, a torpedo boat destroyer. But the ship never saw a single battle; eight years later, it sank after an unfortunate collision with an armed cruiser literally split the vessel in half. And the ship remained underwater, lost—until now.
+In a statement, the Royal Navy reported that, 118 years since the accident, historian-divers with ProjectXplore discovered the remains of HMS Tiger. The project, an international initiative to locate, recover, and study known shipwrecks, found Tiger roughly 203 feet (62 meters) underwater off the Isle of Wight in the southernmost coasts of the U.K. According to the project’s report on the discovery, much of both sections of the lost ship remain intact. The investigation also revealed new details about the ship’s final moments, such as its bearings moments before the tragic collision.

After a few side quests, Quest sank off the coast of northeastern Canada, where it would stay trapped underwater, hidden from sight since 1962—until now.
+A “once-in-a-generation” expedition led by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) has successfully discovered and photographed the wreck of Quest. Remote vehicles operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) found the ship about 1,280 feet (390 meters) below the Labrador Sea. +Sometime between the second and first centuries BCE, a Roman ship carrying hundreds of wine-holding vases sank to the bottom of the sea near the coast of modern-day Sicily. And that’s where it lay for the next two thousand years—until two divers ran into the shipwreck by accident.
+In a statement (translated via Google) last Saturday, the Italian Ministry of Culture reported the discovery of a Roman-era shipwreck roughly 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) off the coast of Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, Italy. Divers Giacomo De Mola and Bisulli Igor encountered the ship at a depth of 151 feet (46 meters). Further investigations by government authorities found that the ship carried hundreds of amphorae, two-handled pots archaeologists believe were used to carry different liquids and grains.
