As a dad one of my greatest fears (other than unemployment) is not being to do anything for my children in the event of a medical crisis when SHTF. Even simple camping trips can turn into a nightmare when you’re out in the woods or up in the mountains without necessary medication to help your loved ones. This is why I’ve taken it upon myself to research and study DIY natural remedies.

Gnats

Get Rid Of Gnats With Just 3 Common Ingredients!

Most people already have everything they need on hand!

JESSICA GRIGGS

Gnats are so easy to get but so difficult to get rid of! Even though these insects are tiny, they are no less annoying than large flies or mosquitos. They might be even more annoying since they tend to descend in swarms and don’t scare off easily. The good news is, there’s actually a simple solution to ridding your home of gnats.

In a small bowl, combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of dish detergent (any kind will do) and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Stir in just enough water to make a nice, sudsy mixture! It’s important to get those bubbles, as they are what help trap the gnats.

Simply place the bowl next to the problem area – kitchen counter, next to a plant, etc., and leave it there. That’s pretty much it. The gnats are attracted to the apple cider vinegar smell, which is much stronger than whatever plant or fruit caught their attention in the first place. You’ll notice your trap working within an hour or so. According to mom4real.com, you can leave the mixture out for a few days or until the gnats go away.

The Kitchen Gadgets Foodies Actually Use, and You Should Too

I’m fascinated by the kitchen. Cooking lets me build community while feeding the people I love, and it’s also how I indulge. Still, it can be easy to get lost in the sea of kitchen gadgets out there. Instead of flail around, I asked foodies about their own favorite products and go-to gadgets to help you sort through the noise and maybe find some inspiration too.

Hate broccoli and cauliflower? Your microbiome might be partially to blame

Lots of sulfuric volatiles in saliva correlated with kids' dislike of these veggies.

Jennifer Ouellette - 11/2/2021, 3:30 PM

For many people, nothing is less tantalizing than a big plate of steamed cruciferous vegetables at dinner. Yes, it's supposed to be good for us, but that bitter taste is just too overpowering and unpleasant. This is especially true for young children, as any frustrated parent can attest. But an aversion to broccoli, cauliflower, and similar foods is not just people being finicky; some genetics are at play. And according to a recent paper in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a person's oral microbiome may also be an important factor.

In 1931, a chemist named Arthur L. Fox accidentally released the powdered form of phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) in his lab. He didn't notice anything unusual, but his lab mate sensed a bitter taste. Subsequent experiments confirmed that this variation existed in the broader population and that not being able to taste bitterness was a recessive genetic trait. For instance, about 25 percent of the population can't taste propylthiouracil (PROP), a chemical that is similar to the bitter compounds found in cabbage, raw broccoli, coffee, tonic water, and dark beers. That population is, like Fox, essentially “taste blind.”

There are 25 “bitterness” genes known thus far; different bitter foods act through different receptors, and people can be high or low responders for one but not another. Many scientists think that those who can sense bitterness are probably responding to compounds called glucosinolates, present in most cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. (I happen to dislike all three, as well as raw tomatoes, and I refuse to feel bad about that.) Those glucosinolates are responsible for much of the nutritional benefits of those veggies, but they also break down into pungent compounds that can negatively trigger many people's bitter taste receptors.

Scientists Discover Amazing Practical Use For Leftover Coffee Grounds

Environment

04 September 2023 - Tessa Koumoundouros

We could be producing concrete that's 30 percent stronger by processing and adding charred coffee grounds to the mix, researchers in Australia have discovered.

Their new recipe could solve multiple problems at the same time.

Every year the world produces a staggering 10 billion kilograms of coffee waste globally. Most ends up in landfills.

“The disposal of organic waste poses an environmental challenge as it emits large amounts of greenhouse gases including methane and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change,” explains RMIT University engineer Rajeev Roychand.

With a booming construction market globally, there's also an ever increasing demand for resource intensive concrete causing another set of environmental challenges too.

These 5 Classic American Restaurant Chains Are Close to Disappearing

Mura Dominko - Tue, September 22, 2020, 9:06 AM PDT

When we say classic American chains, we mean those chains you grew up frequenting with your parents and grandparents. The ones that were a Sunday routine, where you had a favorite go-to order, as did every member of your family, and where prices allowed regular splurging on dessert. (Speaking of, check out these 15 Classic American Desserts That Deserve a Comeback.)

These places may not be serving healthy or hip food by today's standards, but they sure hold a special place in the colorful fabric of the restaurant scene. Unfortunately, such long-standing franchises suffered most during the pandemic, because their businesses heavily rely on families and friends comfortably dining out together—a concept that seems like a distant memory this year.

TRUMP HAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE WILL BE LIVE ROUNDS FIRED AT CIVILIANS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

1.) TAMPONS WERE INVENTED IN WWI TO PACK BULLET WOUNDS. Do not be afraid to use them. If you are shot, or you see someone shot, pack the wound with a tampon and get help as soon as possible.

2.) Carry a spray bottle with 1:1 milk of magnesia and water, to spray into your eyes and mouth or into the eyes and mouth of anyone you see maced or tear-gassed.

3.) If you are brave, carry a bucket full of water and baking soda, 1:1, with a lid, and wear protective gloves, and pick up tear gas canisters that have been shot into crowds and drop them into the bucket to neutralize them. This will stop the gas from harming people around you

4.) If you are REALLY brave, THROW GAS CANISTERS AND FLASH GRENADES BACK AT THE POLICE. WEAR OVEN MITTS TO THROW THE THERMAL GRENADES BACK

5.) If you see someone being arrested, grab them as firmly as you can and run. De-arresting your comrades is important.

Added tips:

Wear a black shapeless drawstring hoodie with NO LOGOS. Draw the string tight around your face and wear a plain cap with the rim bent. Soak a bandana in water or soda to help with gas exposure. Wear goggles, and if you have contacts replace them with your spare pair of glasses if you can. Gas will melt the contacts into your fucking eyes. Wear comfortable shoes, especially running shoes. If you're wearing pants wear them loose enough to move but not loose enough to fall. Bring a bag for first aid, snacks and water.

Leave your wallet and phone in the car. Use cash only and write your emergency contact on your arm in sharpie. Be safe and help your comrades take down the system. Stay safe. God speed.
