Earlier this week, Hi Fly caused panic and joy as it flew over holidaymakers enjoying the beach. The Portuguese charter airline said the performance was planned and intended to raise awareness as well as give planespotters a treat. Let’s take a look at what happened.
It’s a rare treat to see a Hi Fly Airbus A380 in operation at such a close range. But, that’s precisely the treat that some holidaymakers in Portugal got on Wednesday, August 5th.
The A380, registered as 9H-MIP, flew just 230 meters above the Algarve coastline in a stunt that impressed many keen aviation enthusiasts. The airline’s vice president Carlos Mirpuri reportedly piloted the aircraft in a planned event.

The Airbus A380 has completed a trial flight powered on cooking oil. CNN reports:
The test airplane completed a three-hour flight from Blagnac Airport in Toulouse – Airbus' French headquarters – on 25 March. It was powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF – predominantly made of used cooking oil and waste fats – and operating on a single Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine. Airbus then followed up with a second A380 flight, using the same cooking oil fuel, on March 29, flying from Toulouse to Nice. The second flight was to monitor SAF use during take-off and landing.

Fossil fuels are making news for all the wrong reasons of late. Whether it’s their contribution to global climate change or the fact that the price and supply hinges on violent geopolitics, there are more reasons than ever to shift to cleaner energy sources.
In the world of aviation, that means finding a cleaner source of fuel. A test earlier this year took place in pursuit of that very goal, where an Airbus A380 airliner was flown solely on fuel derived from cooking oil.
