+== Scientists Just Updated the Rules for What Happens When We Find Aliens ==

+New SETI protocols outline how scientists should verify, share, and respond to potential evidence of alien intelligence in the modern information age.

 +Michael Garrett, The Conversation - June 9, 2026, 10:25 am ET

+The moment of first contact with extraterrestrials is a staple of science fiction. It usually involves a frantic scientist having a Eureka moment, realizing in a single dramatic instant that Earth is being visited by creatures from light-years away.
 +
+Aliens are in the public consciousness once again thanks to Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, which follows a whistleblower’s attempts to reveal extraterrestrial visitations to the world.
 +
+In reality, the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence is far more likely to emerge as a faint anomaly in astronomical data, followed by a slow, painstaking process of verification, peer review, and intense international deliberation. There might be no single Eureka moment and no lone scientist with the answer.
 +
+As our telescopes have advanced, so too has the complexity of the world we live in. That is why a committee of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) has just voted to accept a major overhaul of the “post-detection protocols”–the scientific code of conduct for what happens after we find evidence of life beyond Earth.

+== Air Force Pushed Out UFO Investigator ==

+J. Allen Hynek started as an Air Force consultant brought in to help explain away early UFO reports, but over time he grew frustrated with what he saw as the government's effort to minimize unexplained cases rather than seriously investigate them. Longtime Slashdot reader schwit1 shares an article from Popular Mechanics, in collaboration with Biography.com, that argues Hynek's shift from skeptic to advocate helped shape modern ufology, and that the Air Force's attempts to control the narrative may have deepened the public distrust and conspiracy thinking that followed. From the report:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+Do you think the U.S. government is hiding, and possibly reverse-engineering, extraterrestrial technology? Think again. Or better yet, don't think about it at all. Nothing to see here. That's the underlying message of a report released in 2024 by the Department of Defense. The 63-page "Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) " concludes that the DoD's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) "found no evidence that any [U.S. Government] investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology."
 +
+The AARO, as The Guardian summarizes, is "a government office established in 2022 to detect and, as necessary, mitigate threats including 'anomalous, unidentified space, airborne, submerged and transmedium objects.'" This report came on the heels of, and in contradiction to, what was arguably the most high-profile hearing on UAPs -- formerly known as unidentified flying objects, or UFOs -- in decades: the August 2023 testimony of "whistleblower" Dave Grusch.

+== Pentagon Begins Releasing New Files On UFOs ==
 +
+Posted by BeauHD on Friday May 08, 2026 @12:00PM from the age-of-disclosure dept.
 +
+The Pentagon has begun releasing new UFO/UAP files through a newly launched public website, starting with 162 documents from agencies including the FBI, State Department, NASA, and others. Officials say more files will be released on a rolling basis. The Associated Press reports:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+The Pentagon has begun releasing new files on UFOs, saying members of the public can draw their own conclusions on "unidentified anomalous phenomena" like an object that a drone pilot says shone a bright light in the sky and then vanished. It said in a post on X on Friday that while past administrations sought to discredit or dissuade the American people, President Donald Trump "is focused on providing maximum transparency to the public, who can ultimately make up their own minds about the information contained in these files." It said additional documents will be released on a rolling basis.
 +
+Besides the Pentagon, the effort is led by the White House, the director of national intelligence, the Energy Department, NASA and the FBI. A newly unveiled website housing the documents on unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, has a decidedly retro feel, with black-and-white military imagery of flying objects displayed prominently on the page, with statements displayed in typewriter-like font. The first release includes 162 files, such as old State Department cables, FBI documents and transcripts from NASA of crewed flights into space.

+== Can You Find the UFOs in These Newly Released Pentagon Videos? ==
 +
+Watch every video released in the Trump admin's first big dump.
 +
 +Matt Novak - May 8, 2026, 2:43 pm ET
 +
+Today’s the day. The U.S. military has finally started to release the much-hyped UFO videos (or UAP, if you prefer) that were promised to absolutely blow our minds. And while some of them are intriguing, many have a Where’s Waldo? quality.
 +
+The Pentagon released files, including videos, images, and PDF documents, at the domain war.gov/UFO, which seems to be intentionally trying to appear mysterious. And we’ll give them that much. Many of the videos are difficult to make out and depict just a small dot quickly floating by.
 +
+But there are some genuinely intriguing videos in the mix. Video DOW-UAP-PR38, for example, was captured in 2013 and includes a shape “resembling an eight-pointed star with arms of alternating length.” It’s unclear what we’re looking at there.
 +
+For his part, President Donald Trump doesn’t seem to think these videos are that important. Trump described the release in a post on Truth Social as the “first tranche,” and insisted it was part of his effort for “maximum transparency.”

+Here at Ars Technica, we do not preclude the possibility that aliens have visited Earth.
 +
 +Eric Berger – May 8, 2026 6:59 AM
 +
+There have been supposed alien sightings for centuries. These observations of “unidentified flying objects,” or UFOs, have periodically surged, such as during the late 1940s and early 1950s as the Cold War began. There have been more sightings since the early 2000s, driven by advances in sensors and cameras that capture images in real time.
 +
+Over the last decade, since the work of a shadowy government program called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was made public in 2017, there has been growing public pressure on the US government to release its files related to aliens. At the same time, UFOs have been rebranded as Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, or UAP.
 +
+Amid the growing public outcry, the Pentagon and other officials have repeatedly stated that they have found no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial beings or their technology visiting Earth. But we live in an era of conspiracy theories and an unbounded and increasingly unhinged Internet. No one trusts anyone. So there are plenty of people who believe aliens are real and the government is covering it all up.

+== Pentagon Releases Second Batch of UFO Videos, First-Hand Testimony ==
 +
 +Posted by BeauHD on Friday May 22, 2026 08:30PM
 +
+The Pentagon released a second batch of UAP files, including 50 videos and documents showing unexplained objects over the Middle East, Syria, Iran, and in NASA recordings. Despite the reports, the agency stresses that it has found no evidence of extraterrestrial origin. The Guardian reports:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+In one video from the Middle East in 2019, taken "likely from an infrared sensor aboard a US military platform operating within the US Central Command area of responsibility," according to the Pentagon, three UAP are captured flying in formation over the Persian Gulf. Another formation of four unidentified objects is seen flying past vessels on the water off Iran in a video from 2022.
 +
+Footage taken over Syria in 2021 shows a mysterious object racing away at speed akin to instantaneous warp-speed acceleration from science fiction movies. Few of the objects seem to resemble flying saucers, discs or other traditionally perceived forms for UAP, although one October 2022 clip taken at an undisclosed location shows a cigar-shaped entity racing over what appears to be a residential area.
