+Whoever takes office after the end of the Trump administration (assuming that happens) is going to need to hire some dedicated webmasters, because these guys just keep adding new domains. The latest, as first caught by a bot that monitors federal domain registrations and reported by 404 Media, is aliens.gov.
+There is no website associated with the domain yet, so who knows what it’ll ultimately be used for—there’s a non-zero chance that it’s something deeply gross and xenophobic. But the registration does come about one month after Trump instructed federal agencies to release government files related to aliens and unidentified flying objects.
+The federal government has danced around disclosures about unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) for years now. In 2022, the Biden administration created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) under the Department of Defense, which is meant to serve as a sort of clearinghouse for all claims of unexplained phenomena. It has investigated at least 366 new reports of UFO activity since its creation, and published a report on historical records kept by the Pentagon, which claimed that there is no evidence of alien visits or hidden spacecraft in government files.

+As explained in a paper and post published last week, SETI points out that it has focussed its attention on narrowband signals and tries to compensate for interstellar events that might distort signals.
+The organization’s new research points out that solar winds or coronal mass ejections may distort signals within aliens’ star systems. SETI therefore hasn’t been looking for likely signals that We Are Not Alone, because it assumed that alien civilizations transmitted narrowband signals.
+“If a signal gets broadened by its own star’s environment, it can slip below our detection thresholds, even if it’s there, potentially helping explain some of the radio silence we’ve seen in technosignature searches,” said Dr. Vishal Gajjar, Astronomer at the SETI Institute and lead author of the paper.
+SETI’s researchers made that suggestion after studying data describing signals sent by human-made probes and finding signal distortion on many missions – the paper mentions Mariner IV, Pioneers 6, 10, and 11, Helios 1 and 2, Viking missions to Mars, Mars Express, Venus Express, and Rosetta missions.

+The speeding object was paced by a 100-pound Hellfire air-to-ground round fired by an MQ-9 drone, which made contact and bounced right off, as shown in the radar footage from October 30, 2024.

The hearing took place in a House Oversight subcommittee meeting on UFO transparency that was partially hosted by MAGA congresswoman and state-sanctioned UFO investigator Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.

It was the latest chapter in a yearslong slow burn of sensational claims, congressional hearings, and yes, the military’s release in 2020 of intriguing videos that do, indeed, appear to show things that defy simple explanations.
+Subsequent reports from NASA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) did not find any link between the unexplained phenomena and aliens, but that didn’t stop enthusiasts from wanting to know more.
+“To date, in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAP,” a NASA blue-ribbon panel wrote in a 2023 report. “The limited amount of high-quality reporting on unidentified aerial phenomena hampers our ability to draw firm conclusions about the nature or intent of UAP,” the DNI report stated in 2021.

Longtime Slashdot reader schwit1 shares an article from Popular Mechanics, in collaboration with Biography.com, that argues Hynek's shift from skeptic to advocate helped shape modern ufology, and that the Air Force's attempts to control the narrative may have deepened the public distrust and conspiracy thinking that followed. +Today’s the day. The U.S. military has finally started to release the much-hyped UFO videos (or UAP, if you prefer) that were promised to absolutely blow our minds. And while some of them are intriguing, many have a Where’s Waldo? quality.
+The Pentagon released files, including videos, images, and PDF documents, at the domain war.gov/UFO, which seems to be intentionally trying to appear mysterious. And we’ll give them that much. Many of the videos are difficult to make out and depict just a small dot quickly floating by.
+But there are some genuinely intriguing videos in the mix. Video DOW-UAP-PR38, for example, was captured in 2013 and includes a shape “resembling an eight-pointed star with arms of alternating length.” It’s unclear what we’re looking at there.
+For his part, President Donald Trump doesn’t seem to think these videos are that important. Trump described the release in a post on Truth Social as the “first tranche,” and insisted it was part of his effort for “maximum transparency.”

These observations of “unidentified flying objects,” or UFOs, have periodically surged, such as during the late 1940s and early 1950s as the Cold War began. There have been more sightings since the early 2000s, driven by advances in sensors and cameras that capture images in real time.
+Over the last decade, since the work of a shadowy government program called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was made public in 2017, there has been growing public pressure on the US government to release its files related to aliens. At the same time, UFOs have been rebranded as Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, or UAP.
+Amid the growing public outcry, the Pentagon and other officials have repeatedly stated that they have found no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial beings or their technology visiting Earth. But we live in an era of conspiracy theories and an unbounded and increasingly unhinged Internet. No one trusts anyone. So there are plenty of people who believe aliens are real and the government is covering it all up.
