+== Where Are the Aliens? New Study Suggests They’re Stuck Like Us ==
 +
+An astrophysicist has proposed an intriguing explanation for why humanity has never made contact with an extraterrestrial civilization.
 +
 +Ellyn Lapointe - October 15, 2025
 +
+In 1950, famed astrophysicist Enrico Fermi posed a profound question during a casual lunch with colleagues: Where is everybody? In other words, if there’s an extremely high probability that advanced alien civilizations exist somewhere, why haven’t we found evidence of them?
 +
+That’s how the story goes, at least. But regardless of the circumstances surrounding its utterance, that question—known today as the Fermi paradox—has captured the minds of researchers ever since. In a new paper, which has not yet been peer reviewed, astrophysicist Robin Cordet proposes “radical mundanity” as one possible explanation.
 +
+Cordet, a senior research scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who is based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, suggests the galaxy is home to a modest number of alien civilizations that aren’t that much more advanced than our own. Because their technology is similarly limited, neither civilization can detect the other.
 +
+“The idea is that they’re more advanced, but not much more advanced. It’s like having an iPhone 42 rather than an iPhone 17,” Corbet told The Guardian. “This feels more possible, more natural, because it’s not proposing anything very extreme.”

+== NASA Administrator Says Odds of Finding Alien Life Are ‘Pretty High’ ==
 +
+The search for extraterrestrial life is at the heart of NASA missions, according to Isaacman.
 +
 +Passant Rabie - April 6, 2026, 3:30 pm ET
 +
+Are we alone in the universe? While the search for life beyond Earth has so far turned up empty, the infamous question continues to haunt humanity’s exploration of the vast cosmos. Now, NASA’s leadership has revealed that the pursuit of finding aliens is also inherent in the agency’s missions.
 +
+During a recent interview with CNN, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said that the prospects of alien existence “goes to the heart” of many things at NASA. “Our job here is to go out and try and unlock the secrets of the universe. And one of those questions is, are we alone?” Isaacman said on Sunday. “So, I would say that is inherent in every one of our scientific endeavors, our exploration endeavors, even building the moon base on the south pole of the moon.”

+== Scientists Just Updated the Rules for What Happens When We Find Aliens ==
 +
+New SETI protocols outline how scientists should verify, share, and respond to potential evidence of alien intelligence in the modern information age.
 +
 +Michael Garrett, The Conversation - June 9, 2026, 10:25 am ET
 +
+The moment of first contact with extraterrestrials is a staple of science fiction. It usually involves a frantic scientist having a Eureka moment, realizing in a single dramatic instant that Earth is being visited by creatures from light-years away.
 +
+Aliens are in the public consciousness once again thanks to Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, which follows a whistleblower’s attempts to reveal extraterrestrial visitations to the world.
 +
+In reality, the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence is far more likely to emerge as a faint anomaly in astronomical data, followed by a slow, painstaking process of verification, peer review, and intense international deliberation. There might be no single Eureka moment and no lone scientist with the answer.
 +
+As our telescopes have advanced, so too has the complexity of the world we live in. That is why a committee of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) has just voted to accept a major overhaul of the “post-detection protocols”–the scientific code of conduct for what happens after we find evidence of life beyond Earth.

+== Government Registers Aliens.Gov Domain as Next Distraction From Everything Else ==
 +
+The truth is out there (on the internet).
 +
 +AJ Dellinger - March 18, 2026
 +
+Whoever takes office after the end of the Trump administration (assuming that happens) is going to need to hire some dedicated webmasters, because these guys just keep adding new domains. The latest, as first caught by a bot that monitors federal domain registrations and reported by 404 Media, is aliens.gov.
 +
+There is no website associated with the domain yet, so who knows what it’ll ultimately be used for—there’s a non-zero chance that it’s something deeply gross and xenophobic. But the registration does come about one month after Trump instructed federal agencies to release government files related to aliens and unidentified flying objects.
 +
+The federal government has danced around disclosures about unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) for years now. In 2022, the Biden administration created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) under the Department of Defense, which is meant to serve as a sort of clearinghouse for all claims of unexplained phenomena. It has investigated at least 366 new reports of UFO activity since its creation, and published a report on historical records kept by the Pentagon, which claimed that there is no evidence of alien visits or hidden spacecraft in government files.

+== SETI Thinks It Might Have Missed a Few Alien Calls. Here’s Why ==
 +
+The researchers who scan the skies for radio signals from extraterrestrials are now rethinking their approach.
 +
 +Matthew Phelan - March 9, 2026
 +
+Scientists hunting for radio signals from any form of advanced extraterrestrial life that might be out there trying to contact us are now starting to wonder if something has been messing with their work.
 +
+A new study published by researchers at the SETI Institute, short for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, has tested the possibility that “space weather” could render strong premeditated alien broadcasts into the kind of fainter radio signals that SETI typically ignores.
 +
+“SETI searches are often optimized for extremely narrow signals,” according to Vishal Gajjar, an astronomer at the SETI Institute and lead author on the new work, published this past Thursday in the American Astronomical Society’s Astrophysical Journal.

 +
+Solar winds near aliens’ homes – and ours – might be blowing away signs of alien technosignatures by broadening signals
 +
 +Simon Sharwood - Tue 10 Mar 2026 05:27 UTC
 +
+The SETI Institute, the nonprofit that conducts a search for extraterrestrial intelligence by examining radio waves for artefacts that are unlikely to be the result of natural processes, thinks it may have been going about it the wrong way.
 +
+As explained in a paper and post published last week, SETI points out that it has focussed its attention on narrowband signals and tries to compensate for interstellar events that might distort signals.
 +
+The organization’s new research points out that solar winds or coronal mass ejections may distort signals within aliens’ star systems. SETI therefore hasn’t been looking for likely signals that We Are Not Alone, because it assumed that alien civilizations transmitted narrowband signals.
 +
+“If a signal gets broadened by its own star’s environment, it can slip below our detection thresholds, even if it’s there, potentially helping explain some of the radio silence we’ve seen in technosignature searches,” said Dr. Vishal Gajjar, Astronomer at the SETI Institute and lead author of the paper.
 +
+SETI’s researchers made that suggestion after studying data describing signals sent by human-made probes and finding signal distortion on many missions – the paper mentions Mariner IV, Pioneers 6, 10, and 11, Helios 1 and 2, Viking missions to Mars, Mars Express, Venus Express, and Rosetta missions.

+==  Witnesses Tell Congress of UFO Sightings ==

 +Posted by BeauHD on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @12:00AM

+A U.S. congressional hearing today on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) featured testimony from military veterans and witnesses describing encounters with mysterious craft, including glowing red squares, tic-tac-shaped objects emerging from the ocean, and videos of missiles striking unidentified orbs. While NASA maintains there's no evidence of extraterrestrial life, lawmakers stressed the need for transparency, whistleblower protections, and further investigation.

+There were four witnesses at today's hearing:
 +
+Jeffrey Nuccetelli: U.S. Air Force veteran and self-described UAP witness who investigated the reported "red square" sighting above Vandenberg Air Force Base.
 +
+George Knapp: Award-winning journalist and chief reporter at KLAS-TV, known for his decades of UFO coverage and multiple Peabody Awards.
 +
+Alexandro Wiggins: Navy veteran of 23 years who reported witnessing a "Tic Tac" UAP aboard the USS Jackson in 2023 and noted his father's work at Area 51.
 +
+Dylan Borland: Air Force veteran and UAP witness with little public information or media exposure available.
 +
+"The public senses that it's real and the people in authority dismiss them," said Knapp, arguing that the public can handle the truth. One of the clips he showed lawmakers was of a drone operator tracking a glowing orb off the coast of Yemen before a missile struck the object. "That's a Hellfire missile smacking into that UFO and just bouncing right off," he said. "What the hell is that?" Knapp said the clip is not unique, claiming multiple video servers with similar UAP footage are being kept from Congress. Borland testified: "This craft interfered with my telephone, did not have any sound and the material it was made of appeared fluid or dynamic."

+==  Shocking radar footage shows Hellfire missile fired by US military bounce off UFO over ocean ==

 +Shane Galvin - Sep. 9, 2025 / Updated Sep. 10, 2025, 6:57 a.m. ET
 +
+The House Committee on Restoring Public Trust unveiled a shocking new video that shows a hulking US military weapon bounce off a UFO as it flew over the ocean.
 +
+The wild footage shared by Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) during the disclosure hearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday shows a Hellfire missile fired by a US military drone striking a glowing orb that flew off the coast of Yemen.
 +
+The speeding object was paced by a 100-pound Hellfire air-to-ground round fired by an MQ-9 drone, which made contact and bounced right off, as shown in the radar footage from October 30, 2024.
 +
+The footage came from a separate MQ-9 drone, which recorded the orb spinning after the missile made contact and continuing on its way, UFO expert George Knapp said at the hearing.
 +
+“There’s a server where there’s a whole bank of these kinds of videos that Congress has not been allowed to see — that the public has not been allowed to see,” Knapp said at the hearing.

 +
+A grainy new video provides fresh fodder for America's UFO enthusiasts.
 +
 +Lucas Ropek - September 11, 2025
 +
+A recent Congressional hearing revealed video of a Hellfire missile fired by a Reaper drone “bouncing off” an unidentified flying object, which has onlookers—Congress included—scratching their heads. The hearing took place in a House Oversight subcommittee meeting on UFO transparency that was partially hosted by MAGA congresswoman and state-sanctioned UFO investigator Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.
 +
+The video sure is, uh, something. As Fox News melodramatically puts it:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+    A House hearing on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) stunned lawmakers when video evidence showed a U.S. drone firing a Hellfire missile at an orb off Yemen—only for the object to remain intact and keep moving, raising urgent questions about technology beyond known military capabilities.
 +</blockquote>
 +
+The video was first shared publicly by Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Missouri), who noted that it was “taken [on] October 30 of 2024″ and characterized it as an “MQ-9 drone tracking an orb or this object off the coast of Yemen.” Burlison said the footage is “presented as received from a whistleblower. Independent review is ongoing.”

+“I am not aware of anything that is extraterrestrial, other than comets and things like that.”
 +
 +Stephen Clark – Mar 4, 2026 2:32 PM
 +
+DENVER—Last month, President Donald Trump took to social media with an announcement that he would direct the Pentagon and other federal agencies to “begin the process” of disclosing government files related to alien life and UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena). It was the latest chapter in a yearslong slow burn of sensational claims, congressional hearings, and yes, the military’s release in 2020 of intriguing videos that do, indeed, appear to show things that defy simple explanations.
 +
+Subsequent reports from NASA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) did not find any link between the unexplained phenomena and aliens, but that didn’t stop enthusiasts from wanting to know more.
 +
+“To date, in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAP,” a NASA blue-ribbon panel wrote in a 2023 report. “The limited amount of high-quality reporting on unidentified aerial phenomena hampers our ability to draw firm conclusions about the nature or intent of UAP,” the DNI report stated in 2021.
 +
+Government officials have said little about Trump’s most recent social media post on the matter. The president cited “tremendous interest” in the files, whatever they might contain. Perhaps the most famous UAP videos released by the Pentagon to date were captured by cameras on Navy fighter planes operating over the sea.

+J. Allen Hynek started as an Air Force consultant brought in to help explain away early UFO reports, but over time he grew frustrated with what he saw as the government's effort to minimize unexplained cases rather than seriously investigate them. Longtime Slashdot reader schwit1 shares an article from Popular Mechanics, in collaboration with Biography.com, that argues Hynek's shift from skeptic to advocate helped shape modern ufology, and that the Air Force's attempts to control the narrative may have deepened the public distrust and conspiracy thinking that followed. From the report:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+Do you think the U.S. government is hiding, and possibly reverse-engineering, extraterrestrial technology? Think again. Or better yet, don't think about it at all. Nothing to see here. That's the underlying message of a report released in 2024 by the Department of Defense. The 63-page "Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) " concludes that the DoD's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) "found no evidence that any [U.S. Government] investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology."
 +
+The AARO, as The Guardian summarizes, is "a government office established in 2022 to detect and, as necessary, mitigate threats including 'anomalous, unidentified space, airborne, submerged and transmedium objects.'" This report came on the heels of, and in contradiction to, what was arguably the most high-profile hearing on UAPs -- formerly known as unidentified flying objects, or UFOs -- in decades: the August 2023 testimony of "whistleblower" Dave Grusch.

+== Pentagon Begins Releasing New Files On UFOs ==
 +
+Posted by BeauHD on Friday May 08, 2026 @12:00PM from the age-of-disclosure dept.
 +
+The Pentagon has begun releasing new UFO/UAP files through a newly launched public website, starting with 162 documents from agencies including the FBI, State Department, NASA, and others. Officials say more files will be released on a rolling basis. The Associated Press reports:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+The Pentagon has begun releasing new files on UFOs, saying members of the public can draw their own conclusions on "unidentified anomalous phenomena" like an object that a drone pilot says shone a bright light in the sky and then vanished. It said in a post on X on Friday that while past administrations sought to discredit or dissuade the American people, President Donald Trump "is focused on providing maximum transparency to the public, who can ultimately make up their own minds about the information contained in these files." It said additional documents will be released on a rolling basis.
 +
+Besides the Pentagon, the effort is led by the White House, the director of national intelligence, the Energy Department, NASA and the FBI. A newly unveiled website housing the documents on unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, has a decidedly retro feel, with black-and-white military imagery of flying objects displayed prominently on the page, with statements displayed in typewriter-like font. The first release includes 162 files, such as old State Department cables, FBI documents and transcripts from NASA of crewed flights into space.

 +
+Watch every video released in the Trump admin's first big dump.
 +
 +Matt Novak - May 8, 2026, 2:43 pm ET
 +
+Today’s the day. The U.S. military has finally started to release the much-hyped UFO videos (or UAP, if you prefer) that were promised to absolutely blow our minds. And while some of them are intriguing, many have a Where’s Waldo? quality.
 +
+The Pentagon released files, including videos, images, and PDF documents, at the domain war.gov/UFO, which seems to be intentionally trying to appear mysterious. And we’ll give them that much. Many of the videos are difficult to make out and depict just a small dot quickly floating by.
 +
+But there are some genuinely intriguing videos in the mix. Video DOW-UAP-PR38, for example, was captured in 2013 and includes a shape “resembling an eight-pointed star with arms of alternating length.” It’s unclear what we’re looking at there.
 +
+For his part, President Donald Trump doesn’t seem to think these videos are that important. Trump described the release in a post on Truth Social as the “first tranche,” and insisted it was part of his effort for “maximum transparency.”

 +
+Here at Ars Technica, we do not preclude the possibility that aliens have visited Earth.
 +
 +Eric Berger – May 8, 2026 6:59 AM
 +
+There have been supposed alien sightings for centuries. These observations of “unidentified flying objects,” or UFOs, have periodically surged, such as during the late 1940s and early 1950s as the Cold War began. There have been more sightings since the early 2000s, driven by advances in sensors and cameras that capture images in real time.
 +
+Over the last decade, since the work of a shadowy government program called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was made public in 2017, there has been growing public pressure on the US government to release its files related to aliens. At the same time, UFOs have been rebranded as Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, or UAP.
 +
+Amid the growing public outcry, the Pentagon and other officials have repeatedly stated that they have found no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial beings or their technology visiting Earth. But we live in an era of conspiracy theories and an unbounded and increasingly unhinged Internet. No one trusts anyone. So there are plenty of people who believe aliens are real and the government is covering it all up.

+== Pentagon Releases Second Batch of UFO Videos, First-Hand Testimony ==
 +
 +Posted by BeauHD on Friday May 22, 2026 08:30PM
 +
+The Pentagon released a second batch of UAP files, including 50 videos and documents showing unexplained objects over the Middle East, Syria, Iran, and in NASA recordings. Despite the reports, the agency stresses that it has found no evidence of extraterrestrial origin. The Guardian reports:
 +
 +<blockquote>
+In one video from the Middle East in 2019, taken "likely from an infrared sensor aboard a US military platform operating within the US Central Command area of responsibility," according to the Pentagon, three UAP are captured flying in formation over the Persian Gulf. Another formation of four unidentified objects is seen flying past vessels on the water off Iran in a video from 2022.
 +
+Footage taken over Syria in 2021 shows a mysterious object racing away at speed akin to instantaneous warp-speed acceleration from science fiction movies. Few of the objects seem to resemble flying saucers, discs or other traditionally perceived forms for UAP, although one October 2022 clip taken at an undisclosed location shows a cigar-shaped entity racing over what appears to be a residential area.
