+After more research has uncovered the fact that battery life for electric vehicles is getting longer and better charging habits can increase that, another study strongly suggests that those looking for the most budget-friendly car in 2026 should look at the potentially large inventory of used EVs hitting the market.
+Three-year-old used electric vehicles are less expensive to own than new or used gasoline-powered cars over a 10-year lifespan, according to a study published Jan. 27 and sponsored by the Responsible Battery Coalition, the State of Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, and the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center.
+Factors in the study included purchase price, the cost of adding a Level 2 home charger, ongoing ownership costs such as fueling, insurance and routine maintenance, and eventual value of the vehicle after it’s ten years old. While full EVs are worth far less then what the window sticker showed they cost when new, the study found that the steep depreciation in price from the first three years significantly tapers off after. Prices then follow a similar trend to equivalent gas or hybrid vehicles. And anything with a gas engine incurs more maintenance costs for the seven remaining years of ownership requiring a greater outlay for the owner as the vehicle aged, as much as a $3,700 difference for some vehicle types.

+== BYD’s cheapest electric cars to have LiDAR self-driving tech ==

+Chinese car giant BYD has reportedly been offering LiDAR sensors in upcoming versions of some of its cheapest cars on the market.
+According to CNC, the latest to be approved versions of both the Seagull, known as the Atto 1 in Australia, and the Dolphin hatchback will come equipped with LiDAR sensors to improve advanced driver assistance system offerings on these cars.
+With this tech, both models are expected to come with 12 cameras, 5 mm wave radars, a dozen ultrasonic sensors as well as the new LiDAR sensor.
+These roof-mounted LiDAR sensors have previously been spotted on BYD and other EV makers’ models priced at more than  $A25,000, at least in international markets, so seeing them on cars that are priced under that is quite a big step in bringing this technology to the mass market.

+Chinese automaker BYD unveiled a new battery pack Thursday that the company says is capable of charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes. Taking it to almost 100% takes about four minutes more.
+Recharge times like those would nullify concerns about electric vehicles’ charging times — one of the few places where internal combustion engines retain an advantage. Even in bitter cold weather (–4°F or –20°C), the pack can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes, according to BYD. The battery pack, known as the Blade Battery 2.0 system, is slated to debut in the Yangwang U7, a full-size luxury sedan.
+There is a critical caveat to this eye-popping figure. The Yangwang U7 sedan, or any other future BYD vehicle equipped with this next-generation battery pack, can only reach this ultra-fast charging time when paired with one of the company’s new Flash Charging EV chargers, which is capable of delivering 1.5 megawatts of electricity.
+Still, BYD is likely counting on this flashy charging tech to boost sales and give it an edge in a price war with other Chinese automakers that are rolling out new and improved EVs at a rapid clip.
+The Shenzhen-based company was a darling of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway holdings for years. The investor bought a 10% stake in the automaker in 2008 for $230 million — long before it became a Tesla rival and household name. Berkshire sold its last shares in 2025, returning more than 20x the original investment.
