+Radio is one of those hobbies that quickly turns a five-minute experiment into an entire evening, which is why I keep coming back to it again and again. As an amateur radio operator myself, I love the hunt for finding signals and attaching all that noise and speech to real-world infrastructure.
+Adding live aircraft into that mix meant I was basically doomed to spend a lot of time matching air traffic control transmissions to real-time aviation events. Unfortunately for me, I live in the middle of nowhere, well out of range of any airport large enough to make use of my own gear for airband listening.
+So, I went hunting online for public Software Defined Radio (SDR) receivers close to major airports that covered the VHF airband frequency, the capability of receiving signals using AM mode, a waterfall display to see active signals, and a trusty online flight tracking map alongside it. After a few hours, I found the perfect combination, and I was hooked.

+Air France and Airbus have been found guilty of manslaughter over a 2009 plane crash which killed 228 people.

+All 12 crew members and 216 passengers on board the flight were killed when the plane crashed into the sea from a height of 38,000ft (11,580m), making it the deadliest incident in French aviation history.
+The wreckage was located after a long search of 10,000 sq km (3,860 sq miles) of sea floor. But the flight recorder was not found until 2011, after months of deep-sea searches.
+Relatives of some of the passengers, who were mainly French, Brazilian and German nationals, gathered to hear the verdict on Thursday.

+Garmin has confirmed the first emergency use of its Autoland system occurred on Saturday in Colorado. “Garmin can confirm that an emergency Autoland activation occurred at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield, Colorado,” the company said in a statement Sunday. “The Autoland took place on Sat., Dec. 20, resulting in a successful landing. We look forward to sharing additional details at the appropriate time.” Social media posts from flight tracking hobbyists reported a King Air 200 squawked 7700 about 2 p.m. local time today. The Autoland system was initiated and landed the aircraft at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport near Denver. A recording from LiveATC’s feed of the airport’s tower frequency includes a robotic female voice declaring a pilot incapacitation and the intention to land on Runway 30. The tape is below and first mention of the incident by ATC is at about 5:00. The Autoland system announces its intentions at about 11:10. (The time stamps are approximate.) There is no word on the condition of the pilot but social media posts suggest all aboard were safe.

+In a video “MH370 Search – Jan 5, 2026 – Did the ship find something?” posted by gilchecksix, the speaker noticed an unusual behavior compared to standard search patterns for Ocean Infinity vessel, currently looking for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
+He suggests this could indicate the use of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Unlike the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that follow pre-programmed paths for days, an ROV is tethered to the ship and controlled in real-time by an operator.
+ROVs are typically deployed to get high-resolution photos or detailed inspections of specific objects or “points of interest” that were previously detected by AUVs.

+According to the aviation safety reporting system administered by the US space agency Nasa, a pilot using the airport in the summer wrote, “Please do something,” after air traffic controllers failed to provide appropriate guidance about multiple nearby aircraft.
+“The pace of operations is building in LGA,” they wrote, referring to the New York City airport, one of the busiest in the US. “The controllers are pushing the line.”
+In a reference to the January 2025 mid-air collision over the Potomac River in Washington DC that killed more than 60 people, they said: “On thunderstorm days, LGA is starting to feel like [Ronald Reagan National airport] did before the accident there.”

+Only two controllers were on duty when two pilots were killed in the crash around 11:45 p.m. Sunday — but only one of them cleared the emergency vehicle to cross the runway to respond to an incident on another plane just as the Air Canada jet was landing, NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy revealed.
+“We know that that controller was still on duty for several minutes afterwards. Normally, they would be relieved,” she said.
+“We have questions about that. Was anybody available to relieve that controller? We don’t know that yet.”
